The 17 Hindu caves form the largest and most dramatic group at Ellora. Built mostly during the Rashtrakuta period, they sit in the center of the 2-kilometer complex.

These monuments showcase massive scale and complex mythology. Carved directly into the volcanic basalt cliff face, they contain Ellora's largest excavations. You will find Cave 16, the world's largest monolithic rock structure, at the heart of this section.

Allow at least two to three hours to explore this central group. Wear sturdy, slip-resistant shoes to navigate the uneven stone floors.
