These 12 caves form the oldest section of the Ellora complex, carved directly into the basalt cliffs between the 6th and 8th centuries CE.

Located at the southern end of the 2-kilometer complex, Caves 1 to 12 represent the Buddhist phase of Ellora. These structures functioned as large viharas (monasteries) and chaityas (prayer halls) for resident monks.

Wear sturdy, slip-resistant walking shoes. The stone floors are uneven, and climbing is required to fully explore the multi-story monasteries.
